I was out riding my bike the other evening.  I was just coming up to a driveway with a hedge beside it when a skunk calmly strolled past the hedge to the edge of the road.  I may have been calm at the time, but my demeanour quickly changed from calm to panic.  His seemed to change also.  Braking did not seem appropriate so I swerved, without doing a shoulder check, and started to pedal faster.  As I passed him, he turned to scurry back up the driveway and his tail went up.  Luckily that is all he did, no smell.  He seemed to pop out of no where and instilled panic within me.

Sometimes, similar things happen in our spiritual lives.  We are happily touring through life and one of Satan’s snares, a sin, pops up on us out of no where and we wonder what happened.  That is why we always need to be on our guard.  1 Peter 5:8 gives a warning and a caution.  “Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping.”  (The Message)
