June 19, 2016.

We are living in the 21st century and people still think it's funny.

People think it's funny to make jokes that involve depression, suicide, cancer, social anxiety, abuse, and all that jazz. It's really not...and I admit, I have done it before too. But I'm talking about this now because I have decided not to. It's immoral, and nobody deserves to hear any of it.

I can understand that people that have not gone through having a mental illness or a serious issue like abuse or rape do not UNDERSTAND what it is like.

However, everyone that is reading this, I'm asking of you to help me in trying to help these people understand.

And if you don't understand and you're reading this, that's totally fine. Let me just tell you about the severity of the situation.

Globally, an estimated 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. About 30,000 people die from suicide each year, and approximately 750,000 people attempt suicide each year. 15 million people have Social Anxiety Disorder. The list only goes on. Here is a website to look at, if you are curious. http://www.adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics

Social media is only continuing to grow. Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter - through all of these, people continue to make these issues seem trivial. Adding on to this is the fact that clothing stores, jewelry stores, and most apparel stores sell merchandise that romanticizes mental illness.

It's really not funny. People that actually go through things like this can find it offensive, because it IS offensive. Of course, everyone isn't perfect and something might slip out of your mouth, but I just hope people start to be more considerate and compassionate about such serious issues.

Thanks for reading.
