In one of my blogs awhile back, I mentioned having an elevator speech when networking with a company recruiter. Recently, I came across a few tips that helped me perfect my elevator speech.

What is an elevator speech?
An elevator speech is a short introduction of yourself that you tell to a company recruit to make a good first impression.

Companies hear the same statements a hundred times throughout the day, but what will make you stand out? I followed these three questions to improve my elevator pitch.

1. Name two/three skills that you are expert in.
2. What are you passionate about?
3. What do you want to be known as?

These three questions/statement will make you stand out more because they go beyond the " Hello my name is...., I go to school at...., I am looking for an internship...". They allow the recruit to get to know more about you in just 30 seconds.

tech_companiesNow let us compare my old elevator speech with my new one.

OLD: Hi, my name is Jazmine Staten, and I am a junior at Louisiana State University. I am majoring in computer science with a minor in digital arts. I’ve had a couple of internships where I worked on several program applications. I enjoy front- end development and using my creativity to develop websites. I am seeking internship opportunities that your company has to offer. Can you tell me how someone with my experience may fit into your organization?

NEW: Hi, my name is Jazmine Staten. I am a junior at Louisiana State where I am majoring in computer science with an art minor. I am very skillful with front-end GUI development and creating beautiful web designs. I also have a knack for creating mobile apps. I am passionate about making a positive impact in the tech world by bridging the diversity gap and being an advocate for tech in the educational realm. When I think about my future, I want to be known as a hardworking woman who put people before myself. Can you tell me how someone like me may fit into your organization?

Hope this helps turn your boring essay into an awesome news read!
