The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 is not a car specifically designed to be a hybrid (as is, for example, the Toyota Prius ). This is a version of the 3008, a type of touring car (or crossover, according to Peugeot), that is, a kind of car with an off-road look, but without being at all, in fact, it could pass through a minivan with the look of todo Camino. It measures 4.36 m in length, 1.84 in width and 1.61 m in height.

Of course, in the HYbrid4 the traction can be total (on all four wheels). To do this combine the two motors one on each axis. The heat engine is placed in front of the engine compartment and moves the front wheels, while the electric motor is positioned on the rear axle and moves the rear wheels. The 3008 Hybrid4 is a full hybrid in parallel, with some nuances.

3008 HYbrid4: Two axles, two engines

The most prominent engine in the 3008 HYbrid4 is the internal combustion engine, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder HDi diesel, with direct injection through very common high pressure (2000 bar) and piezo injectors. The truth is that it is a very refined engine, little noisy and fairly clean, to be diesel. It is thought to be efficient and has a low consumption, in fact, the maximum power gives it a not very high rotation rate, at 3,750 rpm.

The second motor is the permanent magnet synchronous electric, 37 hp (27 kW) peak power (27 hp continuous power) and 200 Nm of torque (or 100 Nm continuous). There is no mechanical connection between the front engine and the rear electric motor. Both can work at the same time, or alternatively. At low speed, only the electric motor can operate (although the manufacturer has not said for how many kilometres).

The combined total power is 200 hp (147 kW) and 500 Nm of torque (peak, clear). Peugeot has not yet provided the data for acceleration or maximum speed. Average fuel consumption is only 3.8 l / 100 km (with alloy wheels 16 ") and 99 g / km CO₂. If the 17 "alloy wheels (which carry a slightly wider tire) are fitted, the average consumption rises to 4.0 l / 100 km.

It should be noted that there is no transmission system between the thermal engine and the rear axle and vice versa (between the electric and the front axle). The intelligent traction control is responsible for distributing the force between the wheels of the same axle according to the conditions of adhesion of the pavement.

The diesel engine has a stop-start system that shuts it off in stopping to reduce fuel consumption. The alternator-starter motor, reversible and somewhat larger than normal, can take advantage of too much energy from the thermal engine and can transfer some power to the rear electric motor. It is not like a Prius in which the electric motor itself starts the thermal engine.

The batteries of the electrical system are Nickel-Metal Hydride, are placed under the rear seats, so the electrical system barely subtracts 12 litres of volume to the trunk, compared to other versions of the 3008. The batteries are recharged in decelerations (with The retention of the engine), but not when braking.

The transmission, for the thermal engine logically, is by means of a manual gearbox piloted (that is to say, there is clutch, although there is no pedal since this one is automated), has six speeds, and can operate in sequential manual mode or in Automatic mode.

Various modes of operation

On the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid 4, the driver can select one of the four modes of operation with a control next to the change.

Auto mode: as its name indicates the management of the two motors is done automatically in search of the highest efficiency.
Sports mode: In this mode, the lowest consumption is not sought and the gearbox is adjusted to delay the change of gear, to a speed of rotation of the superior thermal engine, and to obtain a better acceleration.
ZEV mode: in this mode the exclusive use of the electric motor is forced, hence the name Zero Emission, however the only electric propulsion I fear should not last more than a couple of kilometres (although Peugeot has not specified the data).
4WD mode : this is forced to four-wheel drive running both engines (the problem is that when the batteries are discharged, only electricity can be transferred to the electric motor from the reversible alternator, equivalent to about 11 CV , So the car would be rather a front-wheel drive with some help on the rear axle).

The equipment is quite complete, the usual nowadays. The most basic version is available for 33,800 euros, and the limited edition, more equipped (for example with leather upholstery or GPS navigator 7 "), costs about 39,500 euros (if there will be discounts or not, it is the manufacturer's thing).

It comes with a HUD (Head Up Display) system for basic information projection (such as speed) on a small polycarbonate screen, placed between the frame and the windshield. The headlights incorporate LED daytime running light.

Exterior and interior there are only small features and design details that differentiate the HYbrid4 version of the other versions of the 3008, for example, the different front grille and nuances in the bumper.

The visual quality of the materials used in the dashboard is quite good. The interior of the 3008 is not very large, especially in the rear seats, neither are wide nor have much room for the legs (and I have not found much height to the ceiling). The trunk is quite large (given the size of the car, 4.36 m), has a volume of 420 litres.

It must be recognised that a consumption of 3.8 litres per hundred is very good, especially being a rather high car (but nonetheless with a not too unfavourable aerodynamics, with a coefficient of resistance of 0.29). Still, and being a milestone in diesel hybridization, a greater role of the electric part, with a more powerful engine, and greater capacity of the batteries, even the possibility of being a plug-in hybrid, would make this proposal even more interesting .
