July, 10, 2016- a day every football loving Portuguese would remember. The day Portugal National Team stamped their name in the history of football after an unexpected but well deserved victory in the European cup Final against France, making it, their first ever major trophy win.

Portugal came into the European cup as the underdogs but in the end, emerged the victors. Some might say their win was pure luck, but, the incredible team work of the Portuguese team, witnessed on that pitch is hard to deny.

Their star player, captain, and notably one of the greatest player Portugal has ever produced, Cristiano Ronaldo, got injured early on during the match and had to exit the pitch; a moment where most would have lost hope and determination, yet Portugal carried on playing with everything they had. Their second captain, Nani, was hard to miss; taking charge immediately and ultimately leading his team to victory.

The match reminded me of a quote I came across in the book, To kill a mockingbird:

"Courage, it's when you know you are licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do".

It was a great display of courage from Portugal coming into a competition which boasted of football giants like Germany, Spain, France, Italy, but that didn't stop them from pushing through, fighting on, playing excellently and bringing out some of the best team work in the entire competition. And indeed, their hard work paid off.

The exuberant smiles and tears of joy on the faces of the players and the fans witnessing history at the stadium, it was testament to the statement- Anything can happen. Like I said, it was an unbelievable win but at the same time, a truly well deserved win.
