"Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom." (‭Proverbs‬ ‭11‬:‭2‬ NLT)
"Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall." (‭Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭18‬ NLT)
"Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor." (‭Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭12‬ NLT)
Proud people take little account of their weaknesses and do not anticipate stumbling blocks. They think they are above the frailties of common people. In this state of mind they are easily tripped up. Ironically, proud people seldom realize that pride is their problem, although everyone around them is well aware of it. Ask someone you trust whether self-satisfaction has blinded you to warning signs. He or she may help you avoid a fall.(Tyndal Study Bible)
Here's the thing: those three verses describe exactly who I used to be. I am not correct yet, but daily I improve. Just like the Tyndal writer says, self-satisfaction blinds you. I thought I was better than everyone. Nobody is better than the next person.
I have seen how pride has made people do the wrong things to survive, sometimes even illegal things. You see, pride makes you say bad things about other people to make yourself look good. I think of cars, listen to this: "people buy cars with money they don't have to impress people they don't know." You see what it can do, why else would they do that? Believe me; the warning signs are there, but we are blind to it.
Sometimes we don't even recognise the "pride" problem. Firstly, we have to acknowledge the problem and only after that can we fix it by taking action.
Confess your sins, ask forgiveness and practice humility. And remember, with God all things are possible.
"Lord, open my eyes to these issues. Amen."
