In the movie ‘A Few Good Men’, Tom Cruz as prosecutor makes the statement to the witness, “I want the truth!”.  Jack Nicholson’s character as the witness then answers, “You can't handle the truth!”.

This is same reason that today many people deny the Bible, they can’t handle the truth.  Many choose the parts they agree with, but when it comes to a Biblical statement with which they disagree, they affirm that they don’t believe that part of the Bible.  Really, it’s not that they disagree, it’s they can’t handle the truth.

In the Message Bible, 2 Timothy 3:16 is translated this way.  “Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way,”  Many people will deny the truth of the Bible because it exposes their rebellion, corrects their mistakes and shows them how to live God’s way.  Most people, myself included, do not like our mistakes and rebellious attitudes exposed.  It becomes easier to deny the Bible than to accept these things.

We must come to realize that the Bible is truth.  If we can’t handle that truth, we need to examine ourselves before God.
