Ephesians 4:29 in The Message Bibles says, “Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.”  How pleasant this world would be if we could all follow this command.

We need to be constantly watching over our speech.  Words can never be taken back.  If we say something we should not have said we can apologize, but we can never remove the words from the other person’s ear.  Words can hurt and the hurt can remain for a long time, sometimes it never goes away.

The verse ends with a wonderful statement; “each word is a gift”.  When we give a gift we make sure it is something that the person wants and will make them happy or something that they can use to improve the way they live.  Our words should be the same.  They need be carefully chosen.

Next time you speak, think.  Are these words going to be gift or a rock; something that will build up or tear down; something that will bring joy or despair?  Our words are extremely powerful.
