Tis the season for spiced fruit, apparently. Rich flavours and dark fruits and all things very ‘adult’ tasting. Doing my bit to embrace this with my Spiced Plum & Fig Oatmeal; it has all the above things, as well as the bang-tidy flavour that is blackstrap molasses- that shit is rich and sweet and old-fashioned in a ‘grandma baked you a nondescript cookie’ kind of way, as well as having a wee bit of protein and a nice bit of iron thrown in compared to other types of syrup/molasses. 70g Oats
150ml Unsweetened Almond Milk
50g Figs, chopped
50g Plums, chopped
15g Blackstrap Molasses
1/2tsp Cinnamon (ground)
1/4tsp Cardamom (ground)
1/2tsp Vanilla Extract


1. This one’s pretty simple. Chop up your fruit, and mix in a (microwaveable) bowl along with all your ingredients minus the molasses. At this point, decide how you want the molasses in the oats. I highly recommend 10g in the mix and 5g on top once it’s cooked, so the oats are sweet all the way through. You can mix it all in if you don’t care about the aesthetic and hey, I respect that.

2. Microwave your oats for between 1:20-1:50 mins depending how firm/runny you like your oatmeal. Check it is heated through, if not stir and heat again for another 30s or so, and then enjoy. Serves 1 because breakfast should be an act of self-love.
