I was out for a drive the other evening and passed a field of sunflowers.  I don’t think any of them were facing the sun.  I did some checking and found out that the flowers do not track the sun.  When they first flower some of them may, but as they grow the stems get harder, they do not turn to follow the sun.

Sometimes, as we grow as people, our hearts will harden as the sunflower stems and we no longer face the other Son, Jesus Christ the Son of God.  Just as plants need the sun to grow, we need the Son to grow.  A plant growing constantly in the dark will be straggly and have little support from its stem.  The same is true of us.  If we grow in the dark, without the Son, we too will falter from lack of support.  In John 15:5 Jesus is telling His disciples, and us, “I am the vine, you are the branches: he who is in me at all times as I am in him, gives much fruit, because without me you are able to do nothing.”  (Bible in Basic English)
