When you were a baby, your parents took care of you, helped you learn how to walk, eat and later on take care of yourself. Now that they’ve reached a certain point in their life, it’s time for you to return the favour. Eventually, your parents will need your constant attention and help with doing everyday activities, but also, they may decide to rely on you to help them stay healthy and vigorous. Make the home safe

Home should be the safest place for the elderly to be at, so it’s essential that you remove all kinds of cluttered extra furniture, so they can move freely around the house. If you still haven’t installed grab bars near the toilet and the shower, it’s time you did it, because they’ll be of great help for your elderly, preventing them from slipping or falling down during the shower. Install night lights at strategic places around the house, so that the elderly can find their way around if they need to go to the bathroom or drink water in the middle of the night.

Help them stay healthy

Regular physical activity protects the elders from disease and helps them feel vigorous. That’s why you should encourage them to work out every day, even if it’s just light exercises they’ll do. They can play golf, practice yoga, meditate, and don’t forget to check if they’re eating healthy too. Also, make sure they take their medicine regularly, and that they don’t mix them up. Whether their eyesight isn’t as good as before, or they have memory problems, your parents or grandparents should be able to rely on you to give them their adequate medicine. They need their sleep, but not too much

Older people often have sleeping problems, which is why you should try to make their sleeping pattern constant. Namely, if they go to bed early and wake up at the crack of dawn, they won’t experience as much insomnia as before. Also, it would be a good idea to have them spend their awake time watching TV, reading or doing anything that makes them interested, as long as they don’t do it in their bed. They should look at their bed as the place where they should sleep, instead of doing all the recreational activities. Oversleeping in the morning should also be avoided, because they won’t be able to fall asleep at night when they’re supposed to if they sleep too long in the morning.

Get them to connect socially

Socialization is vital for a healthy lifestyle, so make sure your elderly family members keep in touch with people their age as much as possible. They may even be willing to help others, considering they don’t have careers or kids to help around with, so they may be in the mood to volunteer. Staying at home all the time can lead to depression and unhappiness, so try to keep them involved in social life every chance you get.
