A few days ago, a friend asked me if I knew anything about the google girl code initiative, at first I was like girl code? Hian (pardontheigbowomaninme, shecomesoutasitpleasesher) after much discussion I reluctantly agreed to look into it. I found some interesting information I thought you would love to know about and Oh I had my first go at coding! I caught myself blushing silly at my creations.

What I found :- Google said according to research, LESS THAN 1% OF GIRLS STUDY COMPUTER SCIENCE and Computer science jobs will be the highest-paying sectors over the next decade, paying almost $15K more than average.

Wondering what a CODE is all about here -: Simply put, CODE is a tool that lets you write your story with technology. If you can code, you can communicate your ideas with a computer or a program so they can be brought to life in bigger, brighter, and more creative ways.

Why girls you might ask? According to google -: As the world becomes increasingly driven by technology, our girls are being left behind. By 2020 there will be 1.4 million jobs open in the computing fields, but at current rates only 3% of them will be filled by women educated in the U.S. (probably less than that in Nigeria).

Why is coding such a big deal to google? Google started Made with Code because increasingly more aspects in our lives are powered by technology, yet women aren’t represented in the roles that make technology happen.

If we can inspire girls to see that code can help them pursue their passions, whatever they may be, then hopefully they will begin to contribute their voices to the field of technology for the benefit of us all.

What can girls do with code?

Girls can literally do anything with code! Here are some examples:-

Make the next

hit film
Design the next
trend in fashion
Help save lives
Build a new app
Google has several initiatives to push the girl coding power forward and bridge the gender space in the coding community such as the
GIRLS-WHO-CODE project by google focusing on providing computer science education and tech industry exposure to girls.
WOMEN TECH MAKERSWOMEN TECH MAKERS partnering with google to launch a series of global events geared towards increasing visibility, community, and resources for technical exposure.
GOOGLE SUMMER OF CODE  sadly the 2016 programme is already halfway through. Registration was sometime earlier in the year in march but started in the last week of May. It's strictly for post secondary school students aged 18 and above. I also think this programme is for both sexes and it's a paid internship programme.
Here are a few things I created on the Google Madewithcode site.
