A goal is a necessary step to a resounding success.  The first thing you need to do is decide what in general are you trying to accomplish.  Let’s talk through some alternatives.  Tricked you!  There is really only one alternative and it all boils down to the following:

Alternative A:  You have a product, service, talent or idea that you think the world will embrace.  You want to use this to create a better life for you and your family.  This might be very new to you or it might be something that you have tried and gotten limited success with – doesn’t matter - That Was Then and This is Now. 

What I am telling you is that whether you want to become the next great singer or magician, whether you want to promote yourself or an idea for any end or whether you have created a product or service that you want the world to buy, you are all going to pretty much be on the same path to recognition, wealth and happiness.

But it is important at the start to write down a goal not only because you need to know where you are headed but if you have the goal written down you can also evaluate how you are doing in achieving the goal.

Need some help, welcome to Success 101:  Goal Setting

In order to create a good beginning goal, you simply need to remember the word SMART.  We will use that as an acronym for

S – specific

M – measurable

A – attainable

R – realistic

T – time sensitive

Let’s say that you want to become a celebrity in social media.  Now most people would consider that an impossible goal.  For me, it’s easy to turn that into a SMART goal – let’s go it.

Specific:  Define the goal, saying I want to be celebrity in social media is too general.  Let’s say, I want to obtain 250,000 followers on my social media pages, 25 million likes and be mentioned on the leading social media platforms over a hundred million times a month after the period of a year.

That goal is very specific, so we are on the way to making it a SMART goal.

Measurable:  This goal used real numbers that are updated in real time on each social media site or can be gained off a variety of different social media software packages such as Zoomph. 

It very easy to measure whether you have 250,000 followers or not so we are still working on a SMART goal.

Attainable:  There are a multitude of ways to attain this goal leveraging social media today and that is what I am going to teach you. 

I am proof that this goal is attainable so we are still working on a SMART goal.

Realistic:  If you have an internet connection and a computer, tablet or smartphone than this is a realistic goal.

If you are reading this blog entry, you are “wired” so the goal is realistic and we are almost home creating a SMART goal.

Time Sensitive:  I gave myself a time limit for attaining the results – one year.

There you have it – a totally SMART goal.

Now go ahead and create your own goal.  It could be personal.  It could be product or service related.  It doesn’t matter.  The only thing that is important is that it is a target to help you create recognition, wealth and happiness.

A little more on goals.  You can have more than one goal.  Usually I am working on 4-6 goals simultaneously.  But if you are most comfortable with one goal, by all means start with a single goal.

I usually like my goals to be centered on a time period of three to twelve months.  Five year goals are great but measuring success along the way becomes very difficult.

One final thing before moving on.  Don’t be afraid to change your goals.  Every day of your life is a day of profound change and if along your journey you realize that you put your ladder up along the wrong house to paint, then move the ladder.  Don’t change your goals willy-nilly but make sure to have the flexibility to rewrite your goals based on what life has taught you on your new path.
