Our world has skewed the meaning of true love but God’s Word remains a steadfast, true source of knowledge on how to love.  In a time of controversy and uncertainty one thing remains true, “God is love.” We are commanded to love one another.

The Bible says that God is love, which makes Him the perfect source to learn how to love others, even those who are difficult for us to. “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8)

Jesus is very clear in Scripture that we are to love God and love one another. (Matthew 22:34-40)   Jesus gave some examples in Matthew chapter 12 to show us how to love others and be in relationship.

Jesus fed the hungry and healed on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1-13). It may be hard for us to understand this today, but at the time, these were serious offenses. He was violating some of the most sacred practices of His faith and tradition. Jesus had a different view, however.  He saw that he was fulfilling the Law rather than contradicting it. Perhaps feeding the hungry and healing the sick is what made the day Holy, after all.

It saddens me to see the onslaught of rhetoric, hateful words and verbal attacks via social media even among Christians following the elections.  We need to be reminded of what the Bible says in Galatians 5:13-15, You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

Scripture says, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” (Acts 10:58)

Jesus is calling us to be immersed in love evidenced not only by our words, but also by our actions!
