The Kleptomaniac

-Mother never had a doll.

She tells me

As I search her person

One last time

She was holding books

in her shirt

Underneath her baggy sweater

In the heat of summer

On her wrists

The bracelets and rings

she stole

And still she protests

-Mother never had a doll.

As if that explains it all.
