On a glorious spring day the world was abuzz as the sixth in line to the British throne Prince Harry married his lady love Meghan Markle.  It was a day to remember as the Horse Guards in their sexy red uniforms and Busby hats strutted down the Long Walk and vintage cars and an open carriage whisked the bridal couple to and from the main event.  The pomp and ceremony came at an estimated cost of £32 million, an enormous sum that leaves Casino online looking money shy!

Although the Royal Wedding at Windsor was one of the most extravagant unions in recent history there have been other lavish nuptials… where no expense has been spared.  Here are 6 of the most expensive weddings the world has ever seen:

Brahmani Reddy and Rajeev Reddy

First in line as regards glitz, glamour and big dollar spend was the marriage between Brahmani and her beau Rajeev.  As the daughter of a super-rich mining tycoon you’d expect a lavish showpiece… and a lavish showpiece it most certainly was.

The bride was draped in silk finery and jewellery estimated to be worth $13 million dollars and the ceremony took place in front of 50 000 guests - who BTW got an invitation edged in genuine gold leaf -  at the opulent Bangalore Palace.  The Reddy vs. Reddy extravaganza is estimated to have cost more than $78 million!

Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild

When a Hilton and a Rothschild collide you can expect financial fireworks.  Whispers abound that the two great fortunes are collectively worth trillions of pounds.  The ceremony took place at the Orangery, a delightfully old and elegant greenhouse situated in the grounds of Kensington Palace.  Banks and banks of fresh flowers adorned every nook and cranny and the bride was decked, head to toe, in Valentino.

The cost of the union between Nicky, the great granddaughter of the Hilton Hotel empire and James, the dirty-rich banking heir is not in the public domain but you can bet your bottom dollar it cost a lot more than what the Windsor dynasty forked out for the respective princes’ big days.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Talking of heirs to the throne, the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton were befitting of a future king.  It was a spectacular start to married life as only royal weddings can be.  The bride looked stunning in an Alexander McQueen gown - which reputedly set poor old papa back £300k - and a diamond encrusted Cartier tiara on loan from Her Majesty the Queen.

Once the ceremony was done and dusted at Westminster Abbey no less, the bridal party tiptoed onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the trademark royal kiss.  Then it was on to the reception, a more informal and relaxed affair that continued well into the night.  With Bollinger Champagne flowing like water and canapes featuring all sorts of exotic stuff, the wedding is said to have tipped the scales at £23 million or more!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

When Kim Kardashian, the obscenely rich socialite and TV reality star tied the knot with Kanye West, the celebrations apparently went on for four solid days.  The bride was suitably attired in Givenchy and wore enough gems to dazzle even the most jaundiced eye, while the fresh flowers that were literally everywhere came with a price tag of $75 000!

The couple said their ‘I do’s’ at an exclusive 16th century castle in the heart of Florence Italy.  But the fun stuff didn’t end there - Kim Kanye and their closest crew spent four glorious days skipping between France and Italy for entertainment of a diverse kind.  All-in-all the nuptials cost in the region of $25 million… that’s probably pocket change for the power couple of the USA!

George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin

Hollywood heart throb George Clooney eventually wed his long-time girlfriend Amal Alamuddin in a lavish ceremony in Venice Italy.  The couple formalised their love for each other in the opulent 7-star Aman Venice, a luxury hotel in the 16th century Papadopoli palazzo.  The gorgeous old Baroque building features stunning Rococo décor and original frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, one of the greatest decorative painters of the 18th century.

The bride looked absolutely smashing in an Oscar de la Renta wedding gown made from French lace delicately embroidered with sparkling diamante and pearls to offset her dazzling 7-carat diamond engagement ring.  Celebrity guests like Matt Damon, Ellen Birkin and Cindy Crawford were flown in for the occasion and the celebrations continued for four fun-filled days at a total cost of $8 million!

Pippa Middleton and James Matthews

As the younger sister of the Duchess of Cambridge Pippa Middleton had a license to throw a big bash and that she most certainly did when she married London financier James Matthews.  The wedding took place in a beautiful glass gazebo imported from Belgium at an estimated cost of £30 000.

The guests - which included David and Victoria Beckham, Roger and Mirka Federer, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - were ferried to and from the venue in a fleet of brand new Land Rovers.  As the couple swopped their vows a vintage spitfire flew overhead in acknowledgement of the £1 million union between the two members of Britain’s ‘upper crust’.
