When it comes to mental disorders from depression to eating disorders most people oversimplify them, they do not truly understand the complexity behind the disorder itself or how the recovery process works. It is not about the external world that surrounds someone with a mental disorder, you also have to focus on the internal functions as well.

if they were just about body image, just about wanting the ideal body, media's impact on us, diet gone wrong, if we removed all this then recovery would be okay, it would work, in an ideal world that would be great, but this simplifies that actual impact of eating disorders. It is usually more complex than that, sometimes people use their eating disorder to distract them from the current stressors of situations. For example, being in an unhealthy relationship, being in an abusive or neglectful environment, instead of actually focusing on the current situation, those suffering usually focus on eating disorder behaviours in order to feel control, to not acknowledge what is really going on.

We need to stop simplifying them into just body image just about food. There is always a deeper focus, deeper complex situation happening. By acknowledging this we can start to recover, we can start to help those by just listening to them.

The same goes for depression, it is just not about feeling sad, feeling lonely. It is on a deeper more complex level. This applies to so many mental health issues, including anxiety. By just removing external stimuli that you think is causing the mental disorder related behaviour will not help, must focus on what is driving these behaviours, finding the root and the cause. Once this is found and identified we can then start on the road to recovery.

It is helpful when others understand this, it is helpful when understanding someone who is struggling with mental health, as then they feel valued and listened to rather than just assuming what is causing these feelings. Usually it is an interaction between the environment and internal biological functions and thoughts and feelings. If you are someone with a mental health disorder or know someone who is struggling with one, then give this article a thought, and help them understand and talk to them that you are aware how complex and tormenting a mental illness can be. Let us not oversimplify mental health, lets create awareness and support those who need it most.
