I have read that in past days, men used to dig deep pits and then cover it over with branches and leaves to hide it from sight.  The purpose would be to capture either an animal or an enemy.  Once in the pit, helplessness would descend.  Whether man or beast, the one in the pit was at the mercy of the one who made it.

Satan is the one who will dig a pit into which he would like us fall.  If we are extremely careful, we may see the pit and be able to avoid it.  Unfortunately, we are unable to see them all.

There may come a day when we find ourselves in a pit.  When we do, what are we to do.  King David gives us the answer in Psalms 40:2.  “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”  No matter how deep or how inescapable the pit, God is able to reach down and lift us to freedom and safety.  But even more than that, He will set our feet safely on a rock and put us in a place where we will be safe from slipping back into the pit.  All we need to do is ask Him to help us out.
