I love food, eating is probably one of my favorite things to do. What is my favorite food you ask? Breakfast. Yes, breakfast is my favorite food. There are so many possibilities in breakfast: sweet, savory, fattening, healthy, hot, cold, and so on. I love them all! As much as I love breakfast, it takes a lot for me to actually make it, especially on the weekdays when I just want 5 more minutes in bed and end up being 15 minutes late to work. I have tried meal prepping, but I also failed to dedicate one of my two days off a week to cook. Because of my laziness and strong desire to sleep “just a little bit more” in the mornings I have gotten used to just drinking a coffee in the morning and starving until lunch time, or making poor snacking decisions until it’s time to eat lunch. That is until I discovered a beautiful, brilliant and magical thing called Overnight Oats! I don’t know who invented it originally since there are a million recipes for in on Pinterest; but whoever it was… THANK YOU!

I am sure you have seen a million of these around, I initially came across this magical invention on Pinterest, but I thought I would share it with you anyways because I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!

To get started the first thing you will need is a container with a lid, but since this idea comes from Pinterest it needs to be  a Mason jar, if not then it won’t be Pinterest-worthy. You can pretty much add anything you heart desires to the overnight oats, I keep my oats pretty simple but I also like my ingredients to be beneficial for to me. For this specific combination, I used some oats (crucial ingredient), coconut milk, banana, peanut butter, chia seeds and flax seeds. I make around 3-4 jars and leave them in the fridge so they are ready in the morning to grab and take to work (do not put bananas on the ones that will be in the fridge longer than 2 days, they will turn brown). I like to eat my overnight oats cold, but you can put it in the microwave and they will make warm and delicious breakfast.

Add all of the ingredients to the jar and shake it to mix, put it in the fridge overnight and VOILA! Breakfast will be ready for you to grab the next day when you are running late to work (I can’t be the only one that has this problem, right?)

This is incredibly easy to make, and it will save you time in the mornings so you can get the kids ready, put some makeup on, or if you are like me, sleep 5 more minutes :) . To me starting my morning on the right foot defines my entire day, if I am frantically running around and then hungry until noon I am bound to have a  crappy day; that is just a fact of life for me, I don’t function well hungry. Having my breakfast ready for me to take I hope some of you found this helpful, and if this is your first time hearing about overnight oats (I don’t know how this is possible) be ready for your life to be changed forever!

You will need:

  • Old Fashion Oats
  • Any milk that you prefer
  • TOPPINGS! For my oats I used:
    • Cinnamon- It can help lower blood sugar, can lower bad cholesterol, it has antibacterial properties, anti-inflammatory properties (helps you look less bloated), etc.
    • Banana- Contains many important nutrients, moderates blood sugar, improves digestive health, supports heart health, it is full of antioxidants, it makes you fill full, natural sweetness.
    • Peanut Butter-  Peanuts contain protein, making you feel full through your morning, they also contain potassium which lowers the risk of high blood sugar, stroke and heart disease. Peanuts also contain fiber, magnesium, vitamin E and nutrients.
    • Chia Seeds- they have a lot of nutrients, they are full of antioxidants, fiber, they are high in protein, lower the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, etc.
    • Flax seeds- they are good for your heart, rich in anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory, good for your digestive health, and many other benefits.

Below you will find a “Pinnable” image with measurements for one service since, multiple that by how many jars you want to make. And that’s it! As you can see this little Mason jar is full of heart friendly ingredients, it will make you feel full all morning; which will reduce the need to snack on bad things like Kit Kats (my snack of choice) and it will make your morning go smoother and happier. What is not to love about this!?
