One of the most common questions I find people asking when I Google things, in my own researches, I found out a lot of people are seeking to know how they can give value in exchange for money? People are tired of the norms that societies have placed on us. They want to live beyond the norm; they want to find out how they can generate income for example without all these restrictions that we sometimes impose on each other. Like this norm for instance, that unless you have a second degree, you can’t get promoted in certain positions and earn more income high levels. So many people want to be like others who have broken these norms and managed to live to their full potentials.

Things are changing nowadays; people are changing, the market is changing. It’s more about value, problem-solving and solution giving, opportunity creating, creativity and innovation. Therefore, the questions have also changed; from how many degrees you have acquired to what is it you can offer us, what is the benefit to have you on board? Employers and employees, both are looking for better results and outcomes, each for their own sake. It is no longer like we used to think.

So how you can start to find out how you can give value and make money beyond the norm? You can ask start by asking yourself, what is it you are good at? What skills, talents, gifts, services, or products you can provide, sell, in exchange for money? What is it you do well and really passionate about that people will be willing to pay you to teach and train them? What value you can offer to the market in demand? You need to do self-examination and see what is it you can offer to others in exchange for currency? Even if you may not be at the level of professionalism at the moment, you can start improving today, by keep on learning, practicing, and performing.

You know, the thing about life is that nothing really goes to waste. The things we learn today, the knowledge and skills we acquire today, somehow they will come in handy in our tomorrow. So keep learning, practicing, and performing until one day some people will be willing to pay you in exchange of what you can offer them in return for the service and value you have provided them.

It is called the Law of Accumulation.

The law of accumulation states that basically everything counts. Everything that you do, or fail to do today, counts in some way. For instance; Brian Tracy said, the law of accumulation states, “Every achievement is an accumulation of hundreds of small efforts and sacrifices that no one ever sees or appreciates. Even with achievement of financial independence will require a tremendous number of small efforts on your part.”

Therefore, even our credibility, our skills, talents, and gifts are developed over time. Nobody becomes a pro overnight, right? But the key is to discover what you love and passionate about, and be great at it, excel in it, to the point where you can start earning money through it. I know some people when they started out in their careers, they were paid peanuts, but as they kept on learning, practicing, and performing, and becoming better and better, as they gained more experiences, knowledge, skills, credibility, and climb the ladder, their market values also began to change for them as well.

You can start to ask yourself with the question; “Where would you like to see yourself in five years’ time from today and what will be required of you in order to get there?” The question may look simple to you, but its answer maybe complex than you think.

That’s why we need others in our lives , we learn from others who are doing well than us, that’s why there are mentors all over the world who we can look up to. There is saying “There is no such thing as a ‘self-made’ man.” Behind every success of one’s life you can be sure there are significant investments and contributions of many others such as family members, friends, peers, colleagues, advisors, pastors, teachers, authors, mentors, coaches, even just strangers. Unless you are God, there is no such thing as a ‘self-made’ man.

We need people to get to some places; people of all kinds to help us get where we want to go, with all kind of contributions, sometimes it can even be to encourage us, to model to us, to mentor us, to work with us. This may sound strange, but even our haters, the ones were meant for our harm, they can turn out to be a push to our blessings if we chose not to surrender; they can give us that motivation to want to succeed even more. Therefore, it’s also necessary to have critics in life, but more important to have and surrounded by positive, supportive people who want us to succeed.

It is called the Law of Association.

And I am not talking about the four laws of association by Aristotle; “The laws of contiguity, frequency, similarity, and contrast.” I am talking about the law of association in general which Jim Rohn somehow described about with his famous quote “We are the average of the five people we spend most time with.”

Even though we are not products of our circumstances and environments, but products of our decisions, when it comes to relationships, we are greatly influenced by those we choose to put closest to us. They can influence our way of thinking, our self-esteem, and our decisions. Of course, everyone is their own person, we all have free will to choose, but research has shown that we are more affected by the things we focus on, the environment we choose to surround ourselves with than we think. All these mentioned can have some effect on us.

In marketing and advertising, they have learned this law of association very well. They choose to endorse and hire the most famous people, celebrities, and so on, to advertise and promote their products and services, knowing that their investment will be paid back. People who are well-known to the public and have so many devoted and loyal followers and fans.

Today if you want to be famous very quickly, just mingle with the celebrities, and big authority people, the ones with big names and status, and been seen hanging out with them, or get you picture taken with them, and display it on social media, and I guarantee your profile will become more interesting than others in one day. It is called the law of association.

Who do you hang around with? Who do you choose to read, watch, listen, and influence you, and your life? Who is surrounding you and are allowing in your inner circle? Your connections and network portfolio, who do you know, all of these can be a bridge to your next destination.

So like Jim Rohn said, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time around. The people around you, the ones you choose to be closest to you can affect your personal success; therefore it is important to have the right people by your side, in your life. It is important to have the right people in your team.
