December 9, 1640 - Massachusetts Bans Hugh Bewitt Banished Religious Dissent

By declaring himself free from original sin, Huge Bewitt found himself on trial for heresy. After a nine-day trial, the jury found him guilty and banished him from the colony.

Original Sin Doctrine

The Puritans believed in original sin, a doctrine of some Christian faith that states that all humanity is in a state of sin resulting from Adam's rebellion against God in the Garden of Eden. Many religious leaders believe that by his disobedience, Adam brought sin into the world.
