November 14, 2016 - Monday. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand after midnight (local time) near the coastal community of Kaikoura, some 93 kilometers (55 miles) northeast of the city of Christchurch, the US Geological Survey reported.

The second 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand’s South Island at around 2.20.

And the third 5.8 magnitude was reported to have hit at around 7AM.

Two casualties have been reported - one in Kaikoura and one in Mt Lyford.


 



Tsunami Warning

Soon after the earthquake, tsunami warning were announced expecting waves up to 5m high. However the largest waves were only recorded 2m high. The tsunami alert was downgraded to coastal warning after The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no immediate danger of a broader Pacific-wide tsunami.
