So, you have decided to work from home and be self-employed. Once you make this decision, there are some things you need to do to make this type of business work for you. Although you may think you know what self-employment means, do you really? It goes above and beyond just working from home. There are things you need to do to make it work for you so you don't fail. Here are a few tips for making self-employment work for you.

Have Your Own Workspace

When working from home, you need to have your own workspace set-up for just your work. This should be a room where you can close the door to distractions. A good room in your home to set-up for your own workspace would be a bedroom you are not using. Set-up your desk, computer, and any other office equipment you need for your work such as a printer, scanner, and fax machine. Have some notebooks around to jot down ideas or use an online program to write down ideas. Having your own workspace will help you work without distractions.

Keep all Distractions Away

When working from home, it is really easy to become distracted by the things around you. One thing that happens a lot is that your friends and family may think that because you work from home, you can stop what you are doing and talk to them on the phone, do things for them whenever they need something, or hang out and talk at your kitchen table. If or when this happens to you, you will need to put a stop to all of this. Working from home doesn't mean you don't have to work, because you still do. In fact, in the beginning you might be working a lot more and a lot harder than you normally would outside of the home. Because of this, let everyone know you are working and don't have the time to talk, do things with them or for them, and hang out until after your work is done.

Other things you will have to stay away from to keep from getting distracted include social media websites, online video games, online videos (unless they pertain to work), and your cell phone.

Keep a Routine

Keeping a daily routine will help you get everything done that you need and want to get done during the day. This means keeping to-do lists of your work, writing down a schedule that you stick to, and doing the same thing every day. Don't let it get boring, though. Try to do one thing different each day to keep your day from getting boring. This is because once your day gets boring, you might want to quit what you are doing and do something else. So, although you do need to keep a routine going that works for you, you also should mix it up a little every day to keep from getting into a rut.

Brainstorm on a Daily Basis

Brainstorming is a good habit to have when you are self-employed. This keeps the ideas coming to you for your work. One good way to brainstorm is to go for a walk every day to clear your mind. Most often what happens when you walk to clear your mind is that, those hard to answer questions that keep nagging at you to answer them, the answer may just pop into your head.

Keep Yourself and Your Money Organized

You will need to stay organized on a daily basis if you want self-employment to work for you. You need to keep your office organized and even your email inbox. Label and archive all messages and have important ones going into a certain folder. You know the saying; a cluttered inbox means a cluttered mind. The same holds true for your desk and your office. If there is clutter around you, your mind will stay cluttered because you will be constantly thinking of cleaning it all up, but tell yourself you are too busy. Take the time to clean your office, your desk, and your email inbox and keep them clean.

You also want to keep your money organized. Have half of what you are making put into a business checking or savings account. This way, if you need something for your business, you will have the money put back for it.

All of these tips will help you stay self-employed and make it work well for you. Can you think of anything else to help make self-employment work for you?
