Lookism is the concept of judging people by their physical attractiveness and the treatment given to physically attractive people. Lookism is a relatively new word, coined only in 1978, but lookism has always existed within society. People deny it exists, but it's among us. Every infant that has to be born must deal with it, it's a plague.

Media has shaped its own standards of physical beauty, and obligates man to conform with them, without regard to individuality and inner beauty. It is even said that inner beauty is a term invented by ugly people "to feel better."

Lookism is bad. Once you are aware it exists, and it will make itself known to you sooner or later, it will take away with it your confidence, self-worth, self-esteem. No matter what good you do, it will never be enough. And oh, the endless comparison between yourself and other people.

On a side note, I'm glad that Mattel has released dolls in different body shapes, height and skin color. I really always wondered why every Barbie looked the same: tall, blonde, blue eyes and a wasp waist. Only 1% of the female population looks like that, and certainly I don't look that way.  And it's wrong to buy into standardized beauty, a wrong concept of perfection.
