There’s so much we can learn from the letter to Philadelphia from Jesus Himself. First thing we have to notice is the fact that this Church receives no rebuke and only praise from Him. This shows me that we would be wise to model our church from the very things Jesus praises them for.
As I read through Revelation 3:7-13 where this letter is written in scripture, there is a constant theme. As you read it see if you can notice it.
(Rev 3:7 [HCSB])
“Write to the angel of the church in Philadelphia: “The Holy One, the True One, the One who has the key of David, who opens and no one will close, and closes and no one opens says:
(Rev 3:8 [HCSB])
I know your works. Because you have limited strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name, look, I have placed before you an open door that no one is able to close.
(Rev 3:9 [HCSB])
Take note! I will make those from the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews and are not, but are lying — note this — I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and they will know that I have loved you.
(Rev 3:10 [HCSB])
Because you have kept My command to endure, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is going to come over the whole world to test those who live on the earth.
(Rev 3:11 [HCSB])
I am coming quickly. Hold on to what you have, so that no one takes your crown.
(Rev 3:12 [HCSB])
The victor: I will make him a pillar in the sanctuary of My God, and he will never go out again. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God — the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God — and My new name.
(Rev 3:13 [HCSB])
“Anyone who has an ear should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.
Take a look at some quotes from Jesus in these verses that He is praising:
"have kept My word",
"have not denied My name",
"Because you have kept My command to endure",
"I will write on him the name of My God"

Notice how the only thing they did too receive such praise, was to exalt the name and Word of Jesus. We know from John 1:1-14 That Jesus is the Word, so the two are one and the same. As a Church and the body of Christ our job is to continually lift up the Word of God before others. It needs to become literally what we live and breathe by.

Now I’m sure this Church had its issues because the truth is the perfect Church, pastor or member simply does not exist. I heard a preacher once say that if you happen to find that perfect Church and Pastor you better not go in or you’ll wreck it. Lol. That’s simply true, there will always be fault. However when we focus on lifting up God’s righteousness and the fact that He has caused us to have dominion over our faults and sins, this makes us perfect in God’s sight. Not by our own worthiness but by Gods.

The Philadelphians understood this, they were not praised for their many works even though I am sure they would have been performing them as the Word in us produces servant-hood and love. However they were praised for the keeping and exalting of God’s Word.

We can also see how blessed we can be from this. This letter also shows Gods Covenant heart towards us. Verse 7 shows us that as we exalt Jesus rather than ourselves and our own mighty works and good deeds He Himself is the Key of David. He can open doors that no man can close and shut those doors that should be shut. This is a great benefit. We can trust in our worthy Covenant partner to not let us slip.
(Heb 2:1 [HCSB])
We must, therefore, pay even more attention to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.
Notice how Hebrews 2:1 shows us that we have to give attention to what we have heard. In context the thing heard here is Jesus/ Word of God. As a Church just like the Church of Philadelphia we need to be people teaching and exalting the Word of God. People really don’t need to hear our 10 step plan/idea to freedom. Everything must simply come back to the Word and the person of Jesus.
Revelation 3:10 also teaches that because they had exalted the Word and Jesus they would be kept from the hour of testing that would come on the whole world. As we come into these last days we need to stick close to Jesus. We are taught in the Word that even the elect would be deceived.
God loves us, this is why He has preserved His Word for us to live by. It is not simply just a written Word like other books but it contains the power of God. As we choose to fellowship with God/ The Word we will begin to be transformed into His image.
(2Cor 3:18 [HCSB])
We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.
As we behold with all beauty the glory of the Lord we begin to transform into His very image. This is called fruit. The sins and strongholds will begin to break off us and we will begin to look more like Jesus. Addictions and sins have no more hold on us. I encourage you to go to your Word and behold the Lord and by faith begin to reject all strongholds in your life. Let Christ be the only thing that holds you. In Jesus name
Be blessed
