1Cor 2:4 [KJV])
And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
(1Cor 2:5 [KJV])
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

First Corinthians 2:5 teaches us to not put our faith and trust in man’s knowledge or wisdom, but in God’s power. To continue to read down to verses 9- 11 we learn why.

(1Cor 2:9 [KJV])
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
(1Cor 2:10 [KJV])
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
(1Cor 2:11 [KJV])
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

This teaches us that the Holy Spirit knows the secret things of God and reveals them to us. This is the importance of not being moved by man’s thoughts or counsels when they come against Gods Word. The worlds system continues to be contrary to God’s ways and God’s Word. We as the people of God need to learn to resist all these ways of doing and being. The Spirit of God within us will always guide us into truth and life.

Unfortunately I have seen many Christians come into bad situations simply through receiving what I call “carnal counselling”. Where people have taken advice from either unbelievers or new Christians that unfortunately do not understand Gods Word or ways, or people that simply don’t care about Gods ways. This has lead people into more trouble than almost anything else. Some people simply counsel others according to their own perceptions of life or experiences.

(Ps 1:1 [KJV])
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Psalm 1:1 teaches us great wisdom.

#1 Don’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly. To walk gives us the impression of continuously doing a thing. We as the people of God don’t make it our business to receive our counsel from those that don’t know Gods Word. This doesn’t mean God won’t be able to speak to us through a person not in Gods Covenant. We do however need to be aware that everything we live out of must be in accordance with God’s Word. This is how abundant blessing and victorious living will occur in our lives.

Maybe you have a friend that is new in The Lord or maybe not even a Christian yet. As much as you might have enjoyed their counsel in the past and had them as your closest confidant, as a Christian we need to be assured their unbelief in God’s Word or ignorance of God’s Word doesn’t begin to come into our lives through there counsel. I encourage everyone to find a mentor they feel they can speak with. We are also taught there is wisdom in a multitude of counsel. If your situation is important speak to your pastor and maybe a mentor for clarification. Don’t be one deceived by the counsel of the ungodly.

#2 The next important thing we learn in Psalm 1:1 is to not hang around the same places the ungodly hang. As Christians we are to live Holy set apart lives. A great key to remember is, if you are not making the influence where you are, you are probably being influenced. Pubs, clubs, bars etc are places that sinners an ungodly gather. Psalm 1:1 also says not to sit in the seat of the scornful. To sit in places where God is mocked and scorned is not fitting for Christians. These are the places that counsel is given from a wrong heart and is loved by the devil to throw people of there right path. Now I'm not saying either that there might not be a time you find yourself in such places, however we should be wise to our motives in these places and the what practices we are engaging in while we are there.

We need to be wise as Christians to not get caught up with the world’s ways of doing things. We cannot possibly expect a person that does not closely know God and His Word to sow Godly things into our lives. We need to change our circle of people we receive counsel from. I really pray that this Word would not offend but lift us to a greater understanding of God’s heart towards us. The devil is deceptive and as we all know he uses other Christians to hurt us at times, but he also uses those that are yet seasoned in God’s Word as well as those ignorant. Don’t allow Satan to get a foothold in your life. Be wise who you receive counsel from.

Be blessed
