horse

A horse suddenly came galloping quickly down the road. It seemed as though the man had somewhere important to go.

Another man, who was standing alongside the road, shouted, “Where are you going?” and the man on the horse replied,

“I don’t know! Ask the horse!”

This is a short Zen story. The horse represents our habits. It illustrates how many times we live running around mindlessly, at the mercy of old habits, reacting to our environment and circumstances, rather than with mindfulness and conscious intention.

The horse pulls us, running wildly all over, rushing without purpose, being "busy" just because we are used to this, just because that's the way we always done it, just because this is how we were taught to live... just because... Sometimes we run and run and go nowhere.

If we become a horse trainer, or better still, a horse whisperer we can learn to understand the nature of the horse, and with insight we can teach the horse to go where we want to go. We can become our own masters, and we can master our own habits.
