I don’t normally spend the effort to make “fancy” sandwiches but the other day the other half wanted to make some sandwiches and bought some sub sandwich baguette home. It’s not something I normally get from my grocery shopping but I might as well make the best out of it and think of a good sandwich combination to make.
Cheese is a must for my sandwich, the question was with what other fillings shall I use. I want something that’s filling but simple. After rummaging through the fridge and pantry, I decided to make a cheese steak sandwich with caramelized onions.
This is what you’ll need:
- Sub sandwich bread, split into halves
- Cheese (I used a mix of cheddar and mozzarella but do go play around with different cheeses!)
- Chilli Powder
Firstly, I cut up the steak into thin slices and briefly marinated it with salt, pepper, paprika and a pinch of chilli powder.
Pre-heat the grill/oven, heat the bread until slightly toasted. Lightly butter the bread and layer some cheese on it.
Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan, cook the steak slices until browned. They should be cooked really quick as they are in thin slices. Layer the steak slices onto the bread as well.
Next, in the same pan with all the essence and juices from the steak, add in onions. Let the onions cook until softened and start to turn golden/brown in colour. Add sugar and continue to cook until the onions are caramelized. Add a bit of water from time to time to deglaze the pan and avoid them getting burnt. Add the caramelized onions on top of the steak.
Last but not least, top it off with more cheese and send the sandwich into the oven until the cheese has melted.
It’s really quick to make and everything’s all pretty simple! I guess it’s a tweaked version of a classic Philadelphia Cheese Steak Sandwich with a little kick of spice and such. It’s also a good base of ingredient combination for you to play around and personalise with. You can easily use different spices and toppings to turn it into something else! Enjoy
