Just less than a week ago, Dum Dum Donutterie, launched a new product named The Crone. What is The Crone? In a nutshell, cronut + (ice cream) cone = CRONE.
Who else agree with me that this is indulgence taken to a whole new level? I remember when the idea of cronut was first launched, it was considered a next level indulgence and created a cronut frenzy worldwide. Never would I ever thought that someone would come up with such a heavy idea of substituting the usual ice cream cone with a cronut.
Dum Dum Dunutterie isn't the first to launch The Crone globally but I believe it is the first to do so in England. Nevertheless, it is still a very new concept and it is expected to swept the world's feet away.
So this Crone product costs £5 each and comes in three different flavours - the Very Berry, Chocolate & Coconut, and the Banoffee.
- The Very Berry consists of strawberry ice cream with white chocolate syrup topped with blueberries, raspberries and strawberries.
- The Chocolate & Coconut one is made with chocolate ice cream topped with toasted coconut flakes and dark chocolate syrup.
- As for the Banoffee flavour, it involves vanilla ice cream, salted caramel syrup, bananas and digestive biscuit crumbs.
The Chocolate & Coconut one is what I ordered. First of all, visually it looks absolutely stunning. They are pretty generous with their ice cream and toppings as you can see. The ice cream itself is luscious and very chocolate-y. It's not too sweet and has a beautiful creamy texture. I was worried that the dark chocolate syrup would be too sweet but surprisingly it wasn't and actually blend just right with the ice cream. The toasted coconut added a great crunch and layer of texture to it. The chocolate ice cream and toasted coconut flakes prove to be an amazing combo to indulge in.
As for the cronut bit - before people start freaking out on how fatty and unhealthy this whole combo is, one thing Dum Dum Donutterie emphasises is that their doughnuts and cronuts are all BAKED instead of deep fried. So it actually doesn't taste as heavy as one would have expected. While this is a great thing to know about, I feel that it also took away the actual joy of indulging the very best yet "evil" qualities for this creation. The overall product is pretty rich and heavy because it's of a generous portion but it didn't trigger that guilty pleasure. I personally find the cronut relatively plain and lacked a bit of that buttery satisfaction.
Don't get me wrong, it was really filling and I do suggest to share it with a friend (as I struggled to finish it all up!). I just thought it didn't executed the whole point of the crone. To me, I thoroughly enjoyed the ice cream part a lot but it would've given me a similar effect with a usual waffle cone - that's what I meant by it lacked that unique edge and wowing effect - it was good but not mind-blowing. Nevertheless, it is still quite a special experience and we shall see if this is going to be the new upcoming big food trend!
