The story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah teaches us much about God and His justice, but it also teaches us about ourselves through the life of Lot. Starting out well is our intention as it was with Lot’s but then factors such as distance, fear, a lack of trust sent Lot into a tailspin and it does us as well IF we do not have our mindset to fully trust the Lord. Intellectually we know the truth but we need to take a step of obedience to fulfill it. The question is: will we?
Listen to Andrew Maclaren’s thoughts: “Second thoughts are not always best. When great resolves have to be made, and when a clear divine command has to be obeyed, the first thought is usually the nobler; and the second, which pulls it back, and damps its ardor, is usually of the earth, earthy. So was it with Lot.” Rather we who would be wise should listen and heed the author of Proverbs: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight.” [Prov 3:5-6]
Lesson from Lot: When God clearly tells us His plan step forward and trust Him to fulfill it. When God has started a work He will complete it. The challenge is for us to trust Him to do just as He said. The angels told Lot God’s plan but Lot vacillated and that is a warning to us. Learn from Lot.
