'It's been three years since the Virgil County High School Massacre. Three years since my best friend, Sarah, was killed in a bathroom stall during the mass shooting. Everyone knows Sarah's story — that she died proclaiming her faith.
But it's not true. I know because I was with her when she died. I didn't say anything then, and people got hurt because of it. Now Sarah's parents are publishing a book about her, so this might be my last chance to set the record straight . . . but I'm not the only survivor with a story to tell about what did — and didn't — happen that day.
Except Sarah's martyrdom is important to a lot of people, people who don't take kindly to what I'm trying to do. And the more I learn, the less certain I am about what's right. I don't know what will be worse: the guilt of staying silent or the consequences of speaking up . . .'
This book was amazing.
I honestly didn't know what to expect from this book going into it. I was blown away by what I got. This book was not only thought-provoking it was complete raw, honest and real.
I have read books and seen movies and TV shows about school shootings but to read about the aftermath of such a tragedy was a really moving experience.
Living in a country where we don't have school shootings, I was both horrified and fascinated by this book.
Kody Keplinger did a fantastic job with these characters. I was frightened by how quickly I was able to relate to them and get inside their heads. Feeling what they were feeling and dealing with the emotions that these experiences brought up in both the characters and myself made for a truly captivating reading experience.
I really loved getting to see what happens when the cameras leave and life goes back to normal after an event like this. I can't say I have ever really sat and thought about what happens when these events arent front page news anymore. How do you cope? How do you just go back to school?
I also loved seeing the stories behind the headlines. Kody Keplinger's ability to turn the headlines into three-dimensional characters is truly amazing. The fear, anger and guilt were palpable throughout this story.
I can honestly say I have never read a book quite like this and I will definitely be reading it again in the future.
That's Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger is an absolute must read book for everyone.
