Waikiki Aquarium: Great Family Fun

Waikiki Aquarium: Great Family Fun

The Waikiki Aquarium is located not too far from Diamond Head on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki. It is also quite close to the Honolulu Zoo so you could easily make a day of visiting all three locations.

The Aquarium itself isn’t the largest aquarium you’ll ever visit. And, honestly, I was expecting it to be a little larger than it was given its prime location. However, its size is perfect for families with younger children. The exhibits are brightly colored, feature fun facts about the fish and aren’t too far apart so kids won’t get bored moving from one exhibit to the next. You also have the option of selecting an audio tour when you purchase your tickets at no additional cost.

The aquarium features a number of fish native to the Hawaiian Islands, Sea Turtles, Sea Horses, and much more. My personal favorite, though, was the Monk Seal exhibit. The seals were very active and playful. I really enjoyed watching how the staff interacted with the seals.

The Monk Seal exhibit is located outside along with a few other exhibits including an exhibit featuring Giant Clams and is lined with local plants. The outdoor exhibits were more spaced out and a few were hands on, which younger children will enjoy.

As I said, the aquarium isn’t very large so it will take less than an hours to see all of the exhibits. The aquarium also has a small gift shop that sells t-shirts, toys and other items that would be great as small gifts for family and friends.

Don’t forget to stop off at the photo booth before you leave. There you’ll get to preview the photo you took when you entered and are given the chance to purchase a photo package. This seems to be a popular revenue generator in Hawaii, but it’s certainly a lot easy to shell out a few extra bucks when the money is going to a worthwhile venture like the aquarium.
