So You've Graduated, Now What?

So You've Graduated, Now What?

There’s been a lot of excitement in the last couple months with finals, parties, family visits, and all the other craziness that ensues during your last semester of college. Then you graduate and all of a sudden everything comes to a stand-still, leaving you with no idea where to start. Some of you are employed, but some of you aren’t. Even for those of you who are employed, you may not be in the exact career that you want to be in. But that’s okay! There are a couple things you can do in the meantime to get yourself out there or shape your career path into what you want it to be.

Create a LinkedIn Profile and Make Sure It’s Up to Date!

Whether you like it or not, your social media presence is a huge factor in your chance in employment, ESPECIALLY if you are going into any field involving media. Having a LinkedIn profile that is up to date (that means both text and images) shows that you are mature enough to handle a challenging position and savvy enough to understand social media. Also this is a perfect way to stay in touch with your connections and makes networking possible with a single click.

Order Some Business Cards

I know it sounds old fashioned, but start thinking about ordering business cards through a website such as I like Vista Print because it’s user-friendly and there are so many ways you can customize your card to fit both your industry and your personality. My internship coordinator at SDSU suggested that you leave the back blank and matte, so the person receiving your card can write any notes on it that they need to. Worried about what to put on it? Mine simply says my name followed by, “Advertising and Marketing Professional” with my relevant contact information. When I ordered mine there was a sale, so I even ordered a nifty little case with my name on it. I’m not going to lie to you, when I finally got my cards in the mail I felt like a legitimate professional.

Follow Influencers in Your Industry

This is the time in your life where you should research what’s going on in your field! For instance, I’m interested in advertising and marketing so I follow known ad and marketing experts or ‘influencers’ along with publications such as Ad Week and Mashable. By following these people and publications, I feel like I am up to date with industry trends! Plus, with engagement as an important fundamental in social media marketing, there are plenty of opportunities to connect and network with these accounts!

Explore Your Creative Side

Creativity is what makes all of us unique! Don’t be discouraged to find out what sets you apart from the crowd. Fear is inevitable, but it should never rob you of your dreams. Take me for example! I love to write, so why not start a blog? It’s better to fail than to never pursue what you love to do.

Last but Not Least…

If you’re unemployed, get a job. LITERALLY ANYWHERE. I don’t say this to sound cold, but working will help occupy your time and also expose you to a whole new perspective on life. I have worked at several jobs that I can’t say I really enjoyed (*cough cough Rubio’s cough cough*). I didn’t take this job to become an aspiring taco handler or professional toilet cleaner, but I took the job because I HAD to. I had just graduated high school and was in my first year of community college during the 8 awful months that I had spent there, but that experience taught me many things. A.) I knew that I didn’t want to work at Rubio’s for the rest of my life, B.) I started to appreciate every single minimum wage worker I ever came across, and C.) I finally understood the value of a dollar. These are some of the things that are important to remember on a daily basis, but also to just make you a decent human being. Period.
