Your New Year's Resolutions and Goals

During the Olympics, when the contenders start running some start with very high speed, other moderate, the rest slow movement, but when they start running it’s hard to predict who is going to be the winner, first runner-up, or second runner-up. Usually in the beginning it doesn’t matter what we predict, we surely wait until the end to see who made it.

The statistic shows nearly about 10 percent of people achieve their New Year’s Resolutions and goals. Among 100 percent of the people who started with good intentions, only 10 percent end up achieving their resolutions and goals. This implies that how you start the year is not how you are going to finish it. In fact some quit after the first month, and some do well and continue to persist up to the middle of the year, and then give up. What could be the reasons?

  • Unrealistic goals

Most people set goals that look impossible and they need a miracle in order to achieve them. No wonder we lose the enthusiasm to get things done. We need to set realistic and measurable goals. What can be measured can be managed. Set smaller achievable goals within big goals, and assign deadlines to them. If you want to lose 20 pounds in a year, then it means within three months you must lose at least 5 pounds.

  • No action plan

They say,” If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” The best thing we can do is to create an action plan that allows us to take smaller steps. You have got to have a plan for your goals that is supported by a step by step process with a list of activities and tasks to follow and take action on. The plans serve as a map or an outline for your goals. And the better your plans are the easier for you to follow through. Plan your days the night before; you weeks, months, and year ahead of time.

  • It requires action

We can mean well from the beginning, but in order to accomplish our New Year’s Resolutions it requires action. You have to be committed to make it work by taking series of action steps even when you don’t feel like it. We are all human, we get weary sometimes. At some point in our lives during the year we will be exhausted, but again it’s up to us to continue to reach the finish line.

  • We resist change

Most of our New Year’s Resolutions and goals are going to require us to change something in our lives, and about ourselves. Maybe we need to change our behaviors, and habits. It’s possible that one of the reasons we do not reach our New Year’s Resolutions and our targets is because we resist the change that we need in order to achieve our goals and plans. We don’t want to change our old habits and approaches, and adapt or learn new ones, and adjust our selves in order to cope with the changes.

  • Time management

Time management is an issue for so many of us. And it is an issue because not everybody is in a position to be able to delegate some of their daily tasks and responsibilities so that they can have more time for themselves to focus on accomplishing their personal goals and be more productive. We all have 24 hours, so schedule your days and activities to fit you well. Create daily, weekly, and monthly routines that can help you succeed.

  • Procrastination

Procrastination is a thief of productivity and effectiveness; I am speaking from experience. We procrastinate until the end of the year that’s when we remember, ‘we need to catch up!’ Many people start well in the beginning, and then disappear, neglect, and postpone their plans until the end of the year they re-appear again with fire and enthusiasm trying to catch up what they have been delaying. We must develop that mentality of to do it now, and do it today.

  • Loss of enthusiasm

This can happen you know. In the beginning we usually start with a lot of energy, and zeal, and become very passionate about our New Year’s Resolutions, but then we tend to lose it along the way. Celebrate your small successes and achievements as you continue to progress towards your ultimate goals and plans. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder; so far so good, you have come a long way. The act of rewarding ourselves will ignite that passion when it seems to have disappeared.

  • Lack of self-confidence

Perhaps because of fear of your own abilities to get things done. Fear, doubt, and insecurity, if not careful they will always hinder us to achieve our goals. Sometimes we have got to do what we have got to do even when we are scared. In the Bible in the book of Philippians chapter 4 verse 13, Apostle Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.” You have got to believe in yourself like no other can.

  • Insufficient funds

Lack of finances to carry out our New Year’s Resolutions and plans. Let’s face some of our resolutions and plans may require us to have some kind of funds in order to accomplish our goals. When you are facing financial difficulties, it’s even hard to manage your money because you have so many things demanding your funds, and you don’t have one third of the money required to supply and meet that demand. Some people borrow money because they think what they must do is quite an investment; it will pay off later on, it will bring a better return on their investment.

  • Life disruptions

Life emergencies can slow us down, and can make it hard enough for us to want to give up on our plans and goals. Emergencies do happen, that’s part of life mysteries. If we all knew ahead of time what is going to happen tomorrow, then maybe we would be able to prevent some of them. Thank God, another year means another chance and opportunity to try again.

In the Bible in the book of Proverbs chapter 16 verse 3 reading from New Living Translation, it says, “Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.” In New International Version it says,” Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”

So next time you write your New Year’s Resolutions and Goals be encouraged to ask God for help through prayer to establish your plans. Commit them to God, and just like the Bible passage says, He will help your plans succeed.
