Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is a psychological horror-science-fiction movie that developed a cult following after its release.

Donnie is a troubled teenager living in Virginia, that sees a figure in a rabbit costume that calls himself Frank and that tells him that the world will end in 28 days. One day, when he returns home, he sees a jet engine crashed over his house.

The teenager knows that something absurd is happening after his hallucinations and what he saw happening at his home, but he doesn’t know yet what it really is.

So he tells everything to his science teacher that gives him the book The Philosophy of Time Travel, by Roberta Sparrow.

With time, the rabbit Frank takes over Donnie’s mind and life, making him do several actions he normally wouldn’t do.

This film has so many meanings that I don’t know where to start. First of all, it’s a journey about discovery who you are, a mix of sadness, comedy and madness.

It also talks about fear: what scares you in life? What’s next? The movie is characterized by a crescent climax, that leads the protagonist to understand little by little his destiny. Another important theme of this film is God, and in particular the correlation between God and the existence of multiple universes. There is a chain of events and you have to make peace with your destiny.

This film is a really original work, because it doesn’t follow the common rules of Time: past, present and future. Reading the scientific explanation to this film, Donnie is told about as The Living Receiver, a man who is blessed with powers such as strength, telekinesis and mind control.

In my opinion Donnie Darko is a very individual experience: when you finish watching this film, everyone has a different meaning of what we saw, and different theories, and that’s the highlight of this film. It’s strange, psychedelic, but it leaves you doubts, and also great messages.
