If you’re looking to visit the Greek island of Corfu on a shoestring budget, then look no further. This article will show you how to save money on flights, hotels, getting around, and excursions, without restricting your enjoyment.

Timing

The summer holidays are always going to be an expensive time to visit Corfu. If you can, plan your trip before June as flights and accommodation will be much cheaper.

Flights

If you live in the EU or on mainland Europe, there are plenty of budget airlines that offer cheap flights to Corfu and they even have sales where already inexpensive flights will have their prices cut by more than half.

If you can’t wait for the sales, check out Skyscanner, which will show you the cheapest flights available for flights over a particular month or even the cheapest month of the year to go. This traveller recently found return flights from the UK to Corfu for less than €17.

Other ways to save:

  • Take hand luggage only, especially if you’re going for less than a week.
  • Book after 6 pm on Tuesdays
  • Get a credit card that gives you air miles

Accommodation

While Corfu Town can be an expensive place to stay, you’ll find many cheaper options in Gouvia, Messonghi, or Dassia. You won’t be missing out on scenery and these places are often better for those of you looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.

You can even couchsurf  for free if you’re feeling adventurous. Don’t worry, you don’t literally have to sleep on a couch as many people offer up their spare bedrooms. This also gives you a local host who can point you towards less touristy activities.

Getting around

One of the best ways to see all that this beautiful island has to offer is to hire a car from Corfu airport, which can often work out cheaper  (and more convenient) than public transport. Booking Car Europe compares prices from various rental firms to get you the best deal.

Eating

This cannot be stressed enough, but if you want to save money on food and drink, visit places that the locals use. Touristy areas will often charge you double what the meal would cost in a local haunt, so ask the people at your accommodation for recommendations.

Street food is another brilliant choice for saving money on food as it can cost less than €10 for lunch and dinner combined.

Things to do

If you’d like to save more on your excursions, here is a list of things that you can do in Corfu for free.

  • Visit the beach: Whether you’re getting your feet wet or topping up your tan, there is no charge for using Corfu’s magnificent beaches.
  • Ramble through Corfu’s dramatic fortresses: For a cultural fix, head to Angelokastro, a Byzantine-era castle that fended off the Turks during the 16th century.
  • Explore the olive groves: Just don’t pick without permission.

Hopefully, this article has provided you with enough information to plan a great holiday that won’t break the bank. Whatever you’re planning to do in Corfu, have fun and wear sunscreen.
