My Home Town!!

Sharing all these beautiful locations around the world, I thought it would be a good time to write about my beautiful home town, Geelong. You might have read a few pieces in the past where I have shown you glimpses of the region including Torquay and Lorne however this article will discuss Geelong and some surrounding areas.
Located on Corio Bay and the Barwon River, Geelong is Victoria’s second largest city with an estimated population in the early 200 thousands. A 75km 1 hour drive south-west from Victoria’s state capital Melbourne, Geelong is also referred to as the “gateway city” due to its central location to surrounding cities such as Ballarat, Torquay, The Great Ocean Road and Warrambool.Geelong is a great weekend trip away and because of its central location and close proximity to the surf coast it allows you to fit a lot of sightseeing during you visit, even if it is a relatively short period of time. The CBD of Geelong is also home to some great shopping plazas, fantastic bars and restaurants such as Parkers Steakhouse, The sporting Globe, Edge and The Barwon Club just to name a few, the city also has fantastic accommodation choices ranging from budget motels up to Novotel and Mecure Hotel properties, the plus side to these is that they are all in short walking distance to the CBD while also being close to Geelong’s main transportation hub, the Geelong Train Station.
Summer time is when I really enjoying this beautiful city, with the waterfront a hype of activity, the bars and cafes are always full with people enjoying the sunshine of summer as well as families soaking up the sunshine down at Eastern Beach where Geelong plays host to the largest travelling sky wheel in the southern hemisphere from late November. Another attraction that families would be interested in is the carousel along the waterfront, acquired in 1996 during a five-year $30 million revitalisation of Geelong’s waterfront this 1892 Armitage-Herschell portable steam-driven carousel has been fully restored and is a centrepiece to the waterfront area.Locations of interest around the region include the Bellarine peninsula, a 20 minute drive home to some amazing wineries and also Victoria’s biggest Water amusement park, Adventure Park. The surf coast as mentioned in previous articles is also a 20 minute drive from the CBD and opens you up to the Great Ocean Road where you will find some amazing beaches including world known Bells Beach, further down the road you will find one of Australia’s most known landmarks in the 12 Apostles although over recent periods of coastal erosion we are left with 8 remaining.
Sports Fan? Geelong is home to Australia’s second oldest club in the Australian Football League the Geelong Football club, the stadium is located just short of the CBD and is currently in redevelopment to hold a crowd around the 40,000 mark but is well worth the look for any travelling sport fans.
