Author Interview with B. W. Ginsburg

This month, I interviewed the self-published author B. W. Ginsburg. I am currently in the process of reading her debut book Rest in Piece. She writes about extraordinary events and is incredibly imaginative with her plot.

About the author:

B.W. Ginsburg has enjoyed reading and writing for as long as she can remember. Her favourite authors include: Harlan Coben, James Patterson, and John Saul. B.W. Ginsburg published her first book, Rest in Piece, in October 2016. In addition to writing fiction, Ginsburg also writes about mental health. In her spare time, she can be found blogging, watching TV, and listening to music. B.W. Ginsburg graduated college with a B.A. in Arts; she majored in English and minored in writing. Describe your ideal writing atmosphere.

My ideal writing atmosphere is on the couch in my living room in front of my laptop. I think that it’s super important to be comfortable when you’re writing – it helps the creative process flow. Also, if you’re concentrating on anything other than your writing, you most likely won’t be successful in your work.

How long have you been writing and what inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing since about the first grade. I’ve always had a love for books and I’ve loved the idea of being part of that world. I’ve also always considered my dad a fantastic writer and I believe that I received my gift for words from him.

Describe your writing style.

I think of my writing as kind of casual. I think it’s important to sound intelligent, but not so much so that your readers have no idea what you’re talking about. There are so many books that are considered classics that, in my opinion, are boring or make little sense. I think readers want to read something that they can really identify with. I enjoy writing thrillers and fantasy, along with general fiction.

What kind of story that hasn’t been written yet do you want to read?

As many probably already know, this is my favorite quote! I’d like to read more stories about strange things happening – things people would never expect. I also like the idea of making usually inanimate objects – animate.

Name any authors or books that have had an impact on your writing.

When it comes to authors, I really enjoy the works of Harlan Coben and James Patterson. I think both men are great story tellers. I’ve also been reading Stephen King’s The Green Mile. All three of these authors tell an amazing story. I think it’s so important that a reader feel truly part of what they’re reading and all of these writers are successful at accomplishing this.

Describe the moment you truly felt like an author.

I think I truly felt like an author when I started writing for the site, The Seeds 4 Life. Knowing that my work is something that readers can really enjoy and learn from means the world to me. Also, when I first officially published my first book, Rest in Piece, I felt like a true author. People are paying to read something that wrote!

What book by another author do you wish you’d written?

Oh gosh, so many! I’ll always be reading a really good book and think, “Man, I wish I wrote this!” Harlan Coben’s Tell No One, and Stay Close, along with Stephen King’s The Green Mile are just a few!

What is the best thing about writing/being a writer?

To me, the best thing about writing, is being able to be part of such an amazing process. Being able to share my own words with readers and having them enjoy them is a truly wonderful and beautiful thing!

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Never, ever give up on your dream! This may be a cliché, but it’s true. If you keep reading, and keep writing, you will most likely be successful. Also, if you get a review that you’re not in love with, learn from it and try not to be hurt by it. I know it can be hard, but everyone is entitled to their opinion and the truth can make you an even better author if you’re willing to listen.

Tell the story behind your latest book, why did you write it?

When I was younger, I would go over to my grandparent’s a lot. My grandpa loved putting together puzzles and next to the bed upstairs, he had a really creepy one. I’ve always liked stories that had to do with supernatural beings either coming out of objects or people being sucked into objects, so that’s how my latest book, Rest in Piece came about. I wanted to write something imaginative.

Most inspiring quote?

In my opinion, this quote shows the wonder and importance of writing. Readers are those who enjoy reading the works of others and writers are those who like creating their own works – works that they feel are important to share with the world.

Which author (living or dead) would you like to have dinner with?

Harlan Coben. I just think he tells a fantastic story. His books always keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. He’s a great writer!

If you could bring any fictional character to life, who would you choose?

John Coffey from The Green Mile. He’s literally a miracle worker and so kind and gentle.

How do you beat writers block?

I think it’s important to give yourself a break sometimes. I think some of the best stories come to you at night when you’re only half thinking about them. There’s such a thing as overthinking – even when it comes to writing.

Give yourself some writing advice.

Learn ways to ‘show’ and not just ‘tell’. It’s not easy, but it’s important. Read more carefully and observe how some of the best authors use imagery to move the story along.

What are your plans for the future? What writing projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently playing around with the idea of putting together a collection of short stories. At first I was planning on making them all a bit ‘out there’, similar to the Twilight Zone stories, but now I think it’ll just be a smorgasbord of themes.
