11 Annoying Airplane Habits That Need To Stop

We’ve all got habits, but what is it about being packed on an airplane with hundreds of other people that makes it all the more annoying? I’ve had my share of journeys on airplanes and I’ve come to notice a few things that really get under my skin…

Being rude to cabin crew.
Nothing says “I’m a dick” better than being rude to people whose job is to serve you and make you feel comfortable during the flight. Manners cost nothing and a simple please and thank you can go a long way, so don’t be rude.

Jumping out the seat as soon as the plane lands.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves. It baffles me why people do this – it’s annoying and dangerous. Think about it, the plane has just landed and if you get up and try to get your things from the overhead locker, it could fall and hurt someone. It’s not like you can get out of the plane straight away too because it still needs to make its way down the runway to the gate, so sit back down and wait a little… it won’t kill you.

Constantly getting up to get their things from the overhead locker.
I can understand it if someone didn’t have the chance to get things from their luggage because there’s a long line of people waiting to get to their seats – I wouldn’t want to be the person who holds up the queue either. But once they’ve all settled, you could easily grab all the things you need to keep you entertained during the flight. One tip though, don’t get your things one by one, because it’s a quick way to piss off the person beside you, (you know the one who has to stand up every time?) but lucky you if you get an aisle seat.
Parents who let their children run amok.
Ignoring your kids when they’re misbehaving is not cute. Not when they’re screaming the plane down or just generally being a pain in the arse.

When someone reclines their seat way too far back.
What do I mean by way too far back? It’s too far back when you can’t even put your tray down, when you can see the bridge of their nose and when you can’t feel your legs anymore because they’re being crushed to death. It’s also too far back when the TV screen is merely inches away from your face. I’ve had that happen to me so many times now, you wouldn’t believe it! How did they know that I’ve always wanted to have a TV screen just inches away from my face?! Did you sense the sarcasm in that sentence? Because it’s full of it.

When people kick the hell out of your seat.
I can’t stand it when people kick my seat and I can’t be the only one who feels this way. It’s annoying and uncomfortable. Since we’re all stuck together until the flight is over, why can’t we all just stop kicking seats and get along?

Hogging the arm rest.
You know the ones who plant their elbows firmly on both arm rests and leave no room for you at all? They’re one of the worst people to sit next to, like hello? You’re not the only one who’s got arms!

People who don’t stop talking.
I enjoy conversations, really I do, but when they start going on and on and on to the point that I feel like my ears are going to bleed, I enjoy conversations less.

When someone plays their music a little too loud.
I admit, I play my music a little loud sometimes, but I know when to turn it down, like when people are clearly trying to sleep. It might be your favourite song, but it’s not everyone else’s favourite song, so turn it down please.

Drinking too much on the flight.
If a drink or two will help calm you down, relax you or help make you sleep easier during the flight, then by all means, help yourself. But don’t treat the drinks trolley like your own personal bar because it isn’t. No one wants to sit next to the boozer.

Ignoring personal hygiene.
There’s nothing worse than being sat next to someone who smells like they’ve ran a marathon and didn’t bother to shower or put deodorant on before catching the flight. This is made a 100 times worse if it’s a long haul flight (obviously) because you’re stuck with them and their lovely odour. Showering in deodorant, perfume or aftershave is also equally as bad, because it’s just too much for the senses. Moderation is key here people.

What do you think? What other annoying airplane habits are there? Which ones annoy you the most?
