Boss Girls Weekend

Boss Girls Weekend

On July 22, Freeform dedicated the weekend to "Boss girls." From Friday through Saturday the channel played movies like, The Hunger Games, Legally Blonde, The Blind Side, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Pitch Perfect.  While the idea was to promote the idea that girls can kick butt, I only saw one type of girl kicking butt.

While these films are great and some that are enjoyable to watch, the main characters in all of these movies are white women.  Not one women of color is seen taking charge and beating the odds.  I found this to be puzzling because it's not like there aren't movies that showcase women of color succeeding.  I mean for goodness sake, there's more diversity on Freeform's Disney weekend movie marathons.

Why couldn't they have featured the Bring it On movies that they frequently play on the channel.  They could've played Mulan, Pocahontas, or Another Cinderella Story, all starring or telling the story of girls of color.  I'm sure one of these options could have been added to the list.

I know this may seem like I'm being nit-picky about this, but as a Black girl who enjoys watching tv and movies, I've come to realize that I'm not always represented.  For a young Black girl, not seeing yourself in these movies, you may feel like you're not a "boss girl."  It's so vital to have young girls of color feel empowered and beautiful because so often society tells them they are not.  Next time Freeform should make sure to incorporate girls from different backgrounds, race, and ethnicities when trying to demonstrate girl power.
