The Label Maker

Trusting God

The Label Maker

Who are you?  What labels do you put on yourself?  What labels do others put on you?  What do you believe about yourself?

Let's explore labels others put on us.  Mom, daughter, friend, nice, mean, silly, hateful, ugly, beautiful.  Labels speak about the hats we wear and also our character.  People label us as hateful if we speak our minds and nice when we are agreeable and never object.  Some people don't care what others think of them.  Some only care about appearance and what others think.  What do you think of yourself?  If you were to label yourself, what would those labels say?

Years ago, I would have tags stuck all over myself!

nice, mean, always smiling, don't care, depressed, angry, worthless, undeserving, alone, victim, abused, abandoned, afraid

I was all nice and smiling on the outside; but inside, always stewing.  Forever the depressed victim.  Letting others run over me because I was afraid to speak up for myself.  Over time, small things would build up and I would explode!  Cold and aloof, never letting anyone get close enough to hurt me.  No one was going to tell me what to do!  I had labeled myself as damaged goods.  Unworthy of love and happiness.  Incapable of a "normal" life.

Now, I label myself as child of God, happy, contented, blessed, favored, smart, capable, deserving, worthy, overcomer.

The journey from broken, depressed victim to blessed Child of God was a long hard journey.  I believed in God.  I believed that He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for my sins.  I confessed with my mouth and believed in my heart.  No one told me that all the pain I felt, the things I thought about myself, were supposed to be left at the foot of the cross.  I didn't know to lay down all that garbage and focus on God instead of the pain.  I didn't understand that I needed to choose what to focus on.  I truly believed that I couldn't help being focused on all that pain.  No one told me that finding my salvation would bring great freedom, joy and contentment if I would just lay all the bad down and put God first above all.

So, when I found my salvation, I stayed exactly the same as I was and progressively became worse.  I still didn't know who I was.  I thought I was who the world said I was.  I thought I was what I told myself I was, just worthless with no purpose.  I thought that everything that had happened to me was just my cross to bear and carry.  Oh how wrong I was!

We are who God made us to be.  It's up to us to choose to be His child or a child of this broken world.  God's word says He created us for His glory.

Isaiah 43:7 (KJV)

Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

We walk around feeling unloved and unwanted.  Seeking all this world has to offer.  Never finding fullness and purpose.  Never fully satisfied.  We find what we seek out.  We seek what we dwell on and think about.  If you can't see God in your situation, you are focused on the situation, not God.

Proverbs 8:17 (KJV)

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

The first step toward peeling off those labels is to start seeking God.  Realize that you are loved.  You are wanted.  You are worthy.  You are deserving.  You are a Child of God!  Small changes lead to big accomplishments.  Start seeing yourself as God sees you and you will see great changes in your life.

Romans 12:2 (KJV)

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

Shift your focus to God this week and watch the transformation!

God Bless!

This is really powerful Jeannie, well done! I like this line which is so true! "If you can't see God in your situation, you are focused on the situation, not God". We must see God in all situations and also see ourselves the way He sees us. Today I posted "Living a Purpose Driven Life Unto God" and also a Poem as Inspiration for Today called "The Holy Child's Fate", then I read your article, it just sums up both my posts. We serve us a loving God! God bless you & your writing life Amen!

This hit home for me. You are right. Shifting my focus onto Jesus, and believing in positive labels about myself, not only makes me stronger, but a better person for those around me. And that is worth the struggle to get there.
