Surreal, poignant, at times dull - The Shape of Water was many things but was it good? Yes. In an artsy kind of way. In the sense that the story symbolised how we can find love despite our differences, yet also how those differences can make us feel desperately lonely. But is it fun to watch? There were sweet, funny moments, but many more were uncomfortable and I would argue that several scenes were pointless - set ups for a quick laugh later on. It was almost there but somehow I felt it lacked the magic and wonder that previous del Toro films, like Pan’s Labyrinth, have had in the past.
This is my first in what I hope to be a series of 100 word (or there abouts) reviews giving you a short snapshot of what to expect of the latest film releases. I hope you enjoy!
