BEAM ME OUT SCOTTY!
So it’s time we take our first deep dive in to the topic called virtual reality. To set the mood and to ensure we are all in the same page –> Let’s take a quick and dirty quote from Wikipedia to define Virtual reality and it’s origins:
“The first references to the concept of virtual reality came from science fiction. Stanley G. Weinbaum‘s 1935 short story “Pygmalion’s Spectacles” [6] describes a goggle-based virtual reality system with holographic recording of fictional experiences, including smell and touch. Virtual reality in modern meaning was popularized by Jaron Lanier through his company VPL Research, which held many of the mid-1980s VR patents. VPL developed the first head-mounted display (HMD), the EyePhone, and introduced the Haptic Input DataGlove.[7]“
I see that a lot of our modern day technologies do have their roots in science fiction, but what is virtual reality really? Why do we have the need to create worlds that are not real? Why do have the need to immerse ourselves into a virtual world when there is a whole planet to be explored? This is what we are going to find out.
This topic will be divided in to chapters by the following category:
- General & Background of Virtual Reality
- Pro Virtual Reality
- Con Virtual Reality
- Verdict of Virtual Reality towards our life
SIMULATION CALLED LIFE
I’ve tried out two different products for virtual reality and they gave a different kind of results.
I tried Oculus during my visit to AWE this year in Santa Clara, but I wasn’t that impressed yet. It might have been the application where it was applied and the movement was done with a pad. I could see the application being used in business as it was an architectural software to enable architects and engineers to walk through the design. I got a small headache from the experience ,as my brains were trying to interpret the fact that my eyes were seeing movement even though I was standing still.
HTC Vive hit the jackpot for me, as I had my first test drive this week with it. I love scuba diving and the guys at Deeptale let me try out theBlu demo. You start out on a deck of a shipwreck in the bottom of the ocean, you see fish, manta rays and all of the sudden a big blue whale swims past you. After removing the gear I felt like my brain had expanded 15 centimetres and I wanted more. Feeling of wanting more and more was in my brains and body still after 3 days of the experience, so I’m starting to claim that we are on to something here.
EXPERT ADVICE NEEDED
To understand the business side of VR and also what it means for our everyday life –> I’m going to interview Mr Tero Pänkäläinen who is the admin of Finnish VR portal http://www.virtuaalimaailma.fi/
So let’s see what Tero has to say about VR and it’s possibilities.
Thanks for reading and let me know your opinions and comments what PRO’s and CON’s do you see in virtual reality.
