Choose a platform: What is the best platform?
Back in the day, the 90’s through to the early 2000’s it was very complex to build a website unless you were a designer.
Websites were built using HTML, Flash or CSS codes, systems that are very hard to master.
But a few years ago, all this changed. Website building platforms have made it as easy as drinking a glass of water to build a website.
Let’s quickly look at the website building platforms that are available
If you have been Googling about website building, I trust you have already come across the word “WordPress”
Wordpress is the most used website building platform. According to statistics, 31% of all website on the entire internet were built using Wordpress.
Wordpress has several plugins and offers the flexibility to build any website huge or small.
With WordPress plugin’s you get to include subscription forms, huge image galleries, contact forms and almost anything a good website needs to have.
Huge and famous sites such as CNN, Reuters and eBay were built by WordPress.
WordPress websites are automatically responsive. By responsive I mean websites that appear great on mobile devices without the need for a designer to create a mobile-friendly site.
The other great thing you are assured of with WordPress is that you get enormous and quick support from a huge community of WordPress users but also from WordPress itself.
There is also Drupal, Wix, Joomla, Squarespace, and many others. Drupal is second after WordPress according to statistics. I won’t go in detail about these builders because WordPress takes the trophy and so it's what I advise you to use.
Finding a domain name and a hosting plan
Your domain name needs to be relevant to your niche. It is also better if it is short because shorter domain names can be memorized.
I run a writing business and so my domain name is writersfortress. It’s easy for anyone looking for information about writing to find such a website.
So, go for a name that is short, unique and relevant.
You can buy your domain name from your choice of registrar.
Some of the popular ones are Bluehost, GoDaddy, HostGator, Namecheap etc.
The hosting plan
Many registrars offer packages that include the cost for both the domain name and hosting.
Depending on the host you choose, a good host offers unlimited website space, an unlimited number of email accounts, huge email storage space etc.
Bluehost, GoDaddy, HostGator, Namecheap cost between $2 and $4 per month for their cheapest package.
Setting up your website
Install your web builder
There are two ways to do this. You either use the 1 click installation found in your user panel or you manually install by downloading the builder to your computer.
If you are using the 1 click installation, use these steps
Step 1: Go to your hosting site and log in
Step 2: Click on your control panel
Step 3: Look for WordPress and click
Step 4: Include the domain where your website will be installed
Step 5: Click install and wait for the installation to roll
Your website is ready but wait, that’s not all….
Time to design your site
I know this sounds like a big task but it’s not. You don’t really design your site. You choose from 1500 WordPress customized themes and then customize them.
They have beautiful color fonts, layouts, and stunning designs.
To see the themes, click on appearances and then themes.
To further customize your new site, you may want to add in images of your own that maybe align with your brand and niche.
You can get free images from sites like Pixybay, Splash and many others for free.
But if you like, you can pay a subscription fee of $29 and get stunning photos and elements off Envato Elements.
So, once you are satisfied with your theme's design, install it by simply clicking install and once installed, click Activate.
You may add pages, images or elements to your website by clicking on the dashboard and selecting pages, elements or whatever else you want to re-design and then clicking save after adding what you needed to change.
And there you have it: A fully responsive and stunning website for less than $5.
