How The Graphics Of Slots Have Evolved Over Time

The slots industry has changed over time and these changes have occurred at an uneven pace. There were long periods of gradual change and then more recently, extreme advancements in technology altered the slot industry beyond recognition. Now, we have the luxury to enjoy and discover top slot sites that bring amusement to every gambler!

Where It All Started

The slots journey began when a mechanic named Charles Fey invented the first-ever slot machine back in 1895. This early effort had three spinning reels that contained 5 symbols that included horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell. In 1891 New Yorkers Sittman and Pitt developed a gambling machine that used 5 drums. This held a total of 50 card faces and is one of the earliest efforts to mimic the slots that we have today. In the early 1900s slots were officially banned and so was gambling. However, slots still existed but in a different form that allowed the public to win non-cash prizes such as bubble gum. These slots gave birth to the fruit machine and new fruit symbols were introduced to the reels.

The Gradual Push Towards Video Slots

In 1963 a landmark development occurred that shaped the slots of the future. This major technological breakthrough introduced the first electrical slot machine to the world and this machine was called Money Honey. This was introduced to the public and it proved to be a runaway hit. In 1976 the first video slot was invented, this was the first time the slot machine had moved away from its mechanical predecessors. This machine used a modified 19-inch Sony TV screen for the display. These slots were accompanied by new symbols such as Stars, Crowns, 777 and Gems and they offered much-improved graphics than their predecessors.

The Digital Revolution and The Birth Of The Video Slot Proper

The 1990s will always be remembered in history for the digital revolution. This didn’t just affect gambling it actually transformed the world due to the invention of the internet. The entertainment industry in general, was the big winner from this revolution. In 1996 slots moved to online digital platforms and this allowed for more extravagant computer graphics to be incorporated into slots. Bonus rounds could now take players to second screens within the same games. Symbols became more sophisticated and moved away from traditional ones. Symbols on the reels became animated entities that could move from reel to reel and animated characters became the stars of slots.

Final Thoughts

We now have 3D graphics and games that include animation and this has helped bring characters to life on the reels. Slots like King Kong Cash have digital characters that leap into action when bonuses or special features are triggered. Digital imagery has allowed for more extravagant bonus rounds too. Themed slots that borrow from popular culture are all the rage and characters from movies and TV are regularly utilized by gaming manufacturers. Great examples of how far graphics have come can be seen in superhero-based slots, Age Of The Gods slots and film-themed slots like Mars Attacks and The Goonies.
