"Do They Know It's Christmas?"

"Do They Know It's Christmas?"

Every year my sister and I would wait to hear, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" on the radio.  To us, it signaled it was officially the Christmas season.  Christmas used to be one of my favorite times of year, but now, it's a holiday I just 'get through'.  I put on a happy face, play Santa for my youngest daughter and go through the motions.

The song was recorded in 1984 by some very talented British and Irish singers.  It's original goal was to alleviate suffering in Africa from a horrible famine.  Over the years, I've seen a deeper message; which holds true even today.  While the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season puts so many people in generous, giving and joyous moods, many people struggle to get through the season.  It's a reminder not everyone feels like celebrating; for various reasons.

The song is a reminder you can bring some happiness into someone's life by a simple gesture; donating a toy, attending church with someone, spending time with someone who is alone, acknowledging someone's work, giving an unexpected 'thank you', etc.

Small gestures can have a huge impact.  I would also challenge you to go beyond the Christmas season and try to positively impact someone throughout the year; not just on a holiday.
