Dobrev started her professional career as an actress debuting in the TV series, Degrassi: The Next Generation, in 2006. Having the role of Mia Jones for three-season, she gained attention from her first series only. Since then, she has featured in many TV series, as well as TV films. After the show, her next appearance was on the TV films in 2008, The American Mall, and Never Cry Warewolf.

In 2009, she appeared in the TV film, Degrassi Goes Hollywood, which premiered in the US. Meanwhile, she became a cast member of the American series, The Vampire Diaries. She played the role of Elena Gilbert, and also as Katherina Pierce. The show became a worldwide success, and even her performance was critically acclaimed.

As a guest appearance, she displayed in some series. Then, in the sitcom, Fam she starred as Clem, which also was loved by the people.

Besides being a success from the appearance on the television, Nina Dobrev has also appeared on the big screen. In 2006, she had featured in her first film, Repo! The Genetic Opera.
