Study Shows: Millions Use E-Cigs to Quit Smoking

A recent study conducted using a sample of over 25,000 across the European continent (28 European Union affiliated countries) has found that, relative to the representative sample taken in the study, that just over a whopping 6 million Europeans used e-cigarettes as a means of quitting smoking. While this study is only predictive, if the percentage of the sample is to be believed, this is a huge boost for the perception of e-cigarettes as the best method of helping others to quit smoking. 

Where does this number come from? Well, during the study it was found that 35% of those who currently use vapes/e-cigs are former smokers who found success in quitting for good using this method. It is also worth noting that those who smoked their e-cigarettes daily had a much higher chance of successfully quitting than those who used theirs intermediately.

While this doesn’t mean that e-cigarettes are the magic cure for helping you get rid of your cigarette addiction – remember that 65% still failed to quit – it does prove that e-cigs have become the most effective method of smoking cessation compared to other products. Many former smokers of those who are now firmly a part of the vaping community will tell you that e-cigarettes were the only way they could quit. 

Figures of those who were successful in quitting smoking using nicotine gum and patches are dwindling to say the least, at approximately 6% of the times. It begs the question that if they are still getting their nicotine why are these stats so low? 

The truth is in the routine of smoking: physically putting a device into your mouth and inhaling/exhaling smoke. E-cigarettes offer your arms that familiar sense of muscle memory and effectively ‘trick’ your body into thinking it’s getting its daily dose. E-cigarettes also come with nicotine so the addictive fix is filled there, while still being able to adjust the levels of nicotine in your e-cig so you can slowly wean yourself off the drug and be free of addiction.

Another benefit of e-cigarettes is that they are a relatively cheap habit to maintain, with not nearly the amount of tax to pay on the duty on them compared to tobacco cigarettes. There are plenty of cheap e-juices available on the market too, which helps vapers get a real bargain when choosing their next flavour.

What is worth mentioning here is that the rates of young smokers in the UK dropped a huge 6% (from 26% to 19%) over the past six years. E-cigarettes may have their detractors but even they cannot deny the part vaping must have played in this steep decline of smokers. There seems to be a change in the air when it comes to people’s perceptions of vaping and e-cigarettes and hopefully there will be more studies just like this one to improve public opinion on the matter.
