10 Tips for Curly Hair

10 Tips for Curly Hair

Ever since I was a little girl I remember struggling with my hair. It was always tangled, frizzy and without shape. As I grew up I started picking up tricks and tips from anyone that had curly hair and then with the help of the internet and the advice from several hairstylists I found a routine that works for me. I know a lot of girls out there still struggle with their curly hair so this is me sharing my little knowledge on the subject hoping it´s helpful for you.

  1. Don't wash your hair every day. Curly hair needs to be hydrated and if you wash it every day it´ll start to  dry, instead wash it 2 or 3 times a week. I use some conditioner on the days I don't wash my hair or just massage my scalp with hot water.
  2. Wash your hair with cold water. Some say it works and some say it doesn't, for me it does. For some reason that I don't understand washing your hair with cold water prevents your hair from being frizzy.
  3. Every once in a while deep condition. Like I said I use conditioner when I don't wash my hair but I also do it when I do wash it, remember: curls need to be hydrated! So once in a while it´s important to use some deep conditioning treatment to give your curls an extra moisturization.
  4. Don't brush. This took me a while to figure it out. When you brush your hair you separate the strands of hair that form your curls so use a wide tooth comb or use your fingers to detangle your hair .
  5. Detangle your hair while in the shower. I don't think this needs any explanation, just detangle your hair while is still soaking wet.
  6. Don't use a lot of product. When you use too much product your hair looks heavy and without shape, also in the long run it´ll damage your hair. Use just the right amount, it might take you a while to figure it out.
  7. Find the product that best works for you and stick with it. Like number 6 it will take a while to find it. My tip is use an anti frizz product, a leave in conditioner and a curl defining cream (use them all together or just one). For example, my sister has tiny curls, she finds that curl defining creams makes her hair shorter so she just uses a leave in conditioner; I have looser curls so I use a curl defining curl and when the weather is very humid or I´m having a bad hair day I also use an anti frizz.
  8. Trim your hair every 2 months or so. Trim your hair to get rid of damaged ends also ask your hairstylist to give some shape to your hair so it´s easier for you to style it.
  9. Let your hair dry naturally. Let your hair dry naturally through the day, avoid scrunching or rubbing it. If you must use heat to dry your hair use a diffuser and a heat protector. What I do is after detangling my hair in the shower i just wrap it in a towel and proceed to get ready, at the end I´ll put my hair down and with the help of a curl defining cream and my fingers I define my curls.
  10. Use natural products. Curly hair is very sensible so try using natural products that won't leave a lot of residues. There are a lot of natural products in supermarkets or you can make some at home, if you are interested in DIYing your own just search a little in the internet and I assure you you'll find millions of recipes.

**Extra Tip: If you start feeling like your hair is greasy, without shape and you kinda feel like it´s dirty it might be time for a deep cleansing. Just buy a cleansing treatment at the supermarket or ask in a beauty salon.

I'm by no meanings an expert but I hope that some of this tips will help you. If you have questions about my personal routine or have other tips leave a comment below and let me know!

My mom would fix us sandwiches and we didn't like the crust - being one of 9 children, that was a lot of uneaten crust! So she figured a way to get us to eat it - at least the girls - she said "eat your crust and you'll get curly hair". Well, needless to say, after eating lots of crust I never did get that curly hair she promised. Thanks for sharing!
