Daycare is a vital and necessary service for many parents and children. According to Statistics Canada, approximately 60% of Canadian children under the age of 6 attend childcare programs. Fortunately, daycare also offers many benefits for children in their social, academic and long-term development.

Most parents need to work to support their families, and daycares offer a way for children to be cared for and nurtured while their parents return to work. Research has shown that high-quality child care with caring staff and an enriching environment is highly beneficial for children.

Here are some of the benefits of daycare for children’s development:

Daycare Offers a Stable Routine

Young children thrive on a routine. If they know that when they get to school, they have a snack and then playtime, it helps them feel secure and helps them learn. With a routine, children learn what to expect during the day and what is expected of them. This stable routine also includes a variety of activities to keep them active, engaged, clean, rested and fed.

This routine is also helpful because it ensures that the children have regular and healthy meals and snacks, a nap every day and lots of playtime outside where they can be active and engaging stories and activities. In short, this routine provides everything that a growing and developing child needs.

Daycare Provides Social Interaction

Daycares give children a chance to interact with children outside of their family unit. They also get to know children of different ages and abilities, and this has many benefits for young and older children. Older children learn empathy and responsibility in helping younger children and younger children learn new skills through interacting with older children.

The nature of a daycare environment is that children are in groups with their peers. In this situation, children are required to learn to share, play with friends, make friends, and how to solve conflicts. Preschool education is essential for their long-term social development.

Daycare Provides Enriching Activities

Daycares usually provide a variety of activities throughout the day, including storytime, dress-up, art, physical activities, sensory activities, puzzles and building. The activities are focused around the children’s interests and placed out around the class so that children can engage with the activity when they want to.

They understand that children learn best when they are following their interests and learning at their own pace. There is no right or wrong way to learn, just opportunities for growth.

Daycares Create A Child-Sized Environment

Most daycares are designed to be a child-sized environment. This focus means the chairs and tables are at a height that the children can easily access as well as the toilets and sinks, toy shelves and cubbies. Daycare classrooms are usually well organized with toys on shelves that are uncluttered and easy to see.

This sizing makes it easier for children to access the activities and to help out by putting away their coats, toys and food dishes when they are finished with them. Small individual cots are used for nap times at daycare. These beds create a cozy, safe environment for the children to sleep in.

Daycare offers a safe place to care for your child. Be sure to choose the right daycare for your child since it gives your child opportunities to grow, learn and play in a secure and safe environment, teaching them skills that will help them throughout their lives.
